Αποτελείται από τους πρώτους 7 αυχενικούς σπονδύλους και είναι υπεύθυνος για ένα ευρύ φάσμα λειτουργιών που σχετίζονται με την υποστήριξη και κίνηση του κεφαλιού, την προστασία του νωτιαίου μυελού και τη μετάδοση νευρικών σημάτων.
